Music

The Music Program
The music program is taught by Mr. Steve Giddings. As with all elementary schools across PEI, Montague Consolidated uses the Share the Music series to help deliver the provincial music curriculum. In music class, students get the opportunity to advance their musicianship skills by playing instruments, singing, performing, reading and writing music, and exploring different types of music and styles.

The Christmas and spring concerts offer a small sample of the music learning that takes place at the school. The Christmas concert focuses on grades K – 3, while the spring concert focuses on grades 4 – 6.

There are many extracurricular music activities currently taking place at Montague Consolidated school. Some of which include:

Choir
There are numerous choirs that occur at Montague Consolidated. The first to occur in the year is the Remembrance Day Choir. This choir performs at the Remembrance Day ceremony at the school and has performed The Highway of Heroes and other popular and traditional songs. The second choir to take place in the year is the Christmas Glee Choir. This group performs at the Christmas Concert every year and features vocal soloists as well as dancers. Since 2013, Montague Consolidated has been involved with the PEI Junior Honour Choir. This group consists of only 7-10 students selected by the teacher to perform in a concert with 100 other singers from around PEI. The Glee Choir, in alternating years, performs at the spring concert and features vocal soloists and dancers. They have performed songs by Adele, Katie Perry, and Pink.

Guitar Club
The guitar club is intended for students to be given the opportunity to play a new instrument or advance their guitar skills with peers. Proper technique, chords and picking are just a few of the concepts explored in this peer led group. Guitar club meets at first recess on day 6.

Rock Band

Montague Consolidated’s two school rock bands are the premier performing ensembles at Montague Consolidated for events, assemblies and concerts. Membership is based on audition and is open to students from grades 4 – 6. The band, over the years, have written and recorded their very own original music, have played with Tim Chaisson and Morning Fold and have performed at numerous community events.

Musicals
Every other year, Montague Consolidated School produces a musical. Grades 4 – 6 students are auditioned and handed out parts as early as December and rehearse to perform it in May. Musicals in the past have been Disney’s Aladdin Junior, Alice in Wonderland Junior, and Annie Junior. This year we are working on presenting Disney’s The Little Mermaid Junior!
